On Wednesday, January 8, a 37-year-old poet and mother of three was killed while in her car by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
This event took place on a residential street in Minneapolis. Shortly after the shooting, the president defended the ICE agent’s actions, claiming on Truth Social that he reviewed the footage and determined the officer acted “in self-defense.”
Trump stated, “The woman screaming was clearly a professional agitator, and the woman behind the wheel was disordered; she obstructed and resisted, then violently ran over the ICE officer, who shot her in self-defense.” He later provided an update on the ICE agent, noting: “It’s hard to believe he survived, but he is now recovering in the hospital.”
Public Reaction #
Trump’s remarks about the victim, identified as Renee Nicole Good, sparked significant backlash, with many criticizing his haste to justify the shooting.
Among those speaking out was musician and Stranger Things star Joe Keery, who used social media to express his discontent. He shared a screenshot of Trump’s post on Instagram Stories with the commentary: “Zero human decency. Stop this man.”

Other voices condemning Trump included Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who, during a press conference, asserted: “They’re trying to spin this as a self-defense action. Having viewed the video, I can tell everyone – that is absurd.” He also directly addressed ICE agents in the city, telling them to “Get the hell out of Minneapolis.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also criticized both Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who alleged that Good attempted to run over ICE officers in “an act of domestic terrorism.” Walz stated: “You’ve done enough. [The state] doesn’t require any additional federal assistance.”

According to The Independent, Trump has since reaffirmed his comments on Truth Social, declaring to reporters in the Oval Office that he still holds Good responsible for the incident. He remarked, “I want to see nobody shot. I want to see nobody screaming and attempting to run over police officers either… That was a horrific situation. She behaved terribly and ran him over.”
Critics of Trump’s comments include talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who branded the president a “maniac” (via USA Today), and news anchor Chris Hayes, who characterized ICE’s actions as potentially viewed by many as “cold-blooded murder.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom also referred to ICE’s actions as “state-sponsored terrorism” (according to The Independent).
In contrast, others have defended ICE, including Vice President JD Vance, who claimed on X/Twitter that Good was a “deranged leftist” and asserted that her death was “a tragedy of her own making.”
Moreover, Noem’s deputy, Tricia McLaughlin, referred to Good as a “violent rioter” who had “weaponized her vehicle” on X.
Keery’s remarks followed the conclusion of Stranger Things’ fifth and final season on New Year’s Day, with the series’ finale attracting a record 59.6 million views on Netflix. Keery also releases music under the name Djo, and his recent viral hit ‘End Of The Beginning’ surpassed Taylor Swift’s ‘The Fate Of Ophelia’ on Spotify’s global chart.
