British Airways Suspends Podcast Sponsorship #
British Airways has decided to terminate its sponsorship of the Louis Theroux podcast in light of his recent discussion with Bob Vylan.
Controversial Performance at Glastonbury #
During this year’s Glastonbury Festival, the punk duo delivered a performance on the West Holts Stage that stirred up significant controversy. They utilized their platform to express support for Palestine, criticize the Israeli military, and challenge the actions of both the BBC and the UK and US governments.
In a particularly provocative moment, Vylan prompted the massive audience with, “Have you heard this one?” before leading a chant of “death, death to the IDF.” This led to a criminal investigation by Avon and Somerset Police, the cancellation of several international performances, and the revocation of their US visas.
Bobby Vylan’s Remarks on the Podcast #
Earlier this week, lead vocalist Bobby Vylan participated in an extensive interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast, stating that he feels “not regretful” about his comments at Glastonbury. He emphasized, “I’d do it again tomorrow, twice on Sundays. I’m absolutely not regretful.”
In response to British Airways’ actions, a representative commented, “Our sponsorship of the series has now been paused, and the advert has been removed,” as reported by the Guardian. “We appreciate that this issue has been brought to our attention, as the content clearly violates our sponsorship policy regarding politically sensitive matters.” They also mentioned ongoing investigations into how this situation arose.
In the podcast, Vylan remarked that the backlash he experienced was “minimal,” stating, “It’s minimal compared to what people in Palestine are dealing with. If that can be my contribution, and if I can bring some comfort to my friends from Palestine, then so be it.” He stressed the importance of their support, saying that he didn’t want to overstate the chant’s significance, but felt he was advocating for those who needed a voice.
Following the festival performance, Avon and Somerset Police announced they were investigating, and Bob Vylan’s US tour visas were subsequently revoked ahead of scheduled October shows. In July, it was reported that the investigation into Bob Vylan’s Glastonbury performance was ongoing, although it was confirmed that inquiries into Kneecap’s performance had ceased.
Recently, Bob Vylan criticized BBC director-general Tim Davie after he described the corporation’s decision to broadcast their Glasto performance as “a very significant mistake.” Vylan labeled him a “spineless puppet” and reiterated their innocence.
Earlier this week, they postponed their headline shows in Manchester and Leeds “due to political pressure” from MPs and Jewish leaders. These performances were intended to be the first stops on their 2025 ‘We Won’t Go Quietly’ UK and Ireland tour, originally set for Leeds’ O2 Academy on November 4, followed by a show at Manchester Academy on November 5.
The “political pressure” mentioned by Bob Vylan highlights the concerns expressed by various MPs and Jewish leaders regarding the duo’s northern performances. They continue to defend their Glastonbury appearance, asserting it was crucial to “teach our children to speak up for the change they desire” and reiterated their aim for the “dismantling of a violent military machine.”
The duo recently released their first single following the controversy, titled ‘Sick Sad World,’ in which they challenged Prime Minister Keir Starmer and addressed “the BBC’s lies.”
